IRVING, Texas, Jan. 6 — As families continue to place heightened focus on healthy diets, Wonder Bread has unveiled the Sandwich Wonder-izer(TM), a new online tool that enables consumers to create unique sandwich combinations from a list of more than 120 ingredients – from cheddar cheese to cucumbers and sprouts to salami – while calculating the sandwich’s nutrition values in real time with each added ingredient. Available at www.wonderbread.com, the Sandwich Wonder-izer can create billions of sandwiches and, at the same time, show visitors how close they come to fulfilling the daily recommended amounts of key vitamins and minerals.
For example, according to the Sandwich Wonder-izer, a sandwich made with two slices of Wonder’s new calcium-enhanced Wonder Classic bread paired with two slices of Swiss cheese, a three-ounce serving of grilled chicken breast, lettuce, tomato and mustard provides more than 60 percent of the daily recommended intake of calcium for adults ages 18 – 50.
Sandwiches created from scratch can then be named and shared with friends via web sites such as Facebook and Twitter. In addition to creating new sandwiches, the Sandwich Wonder-izer also offers a menu of pre-made sandwich recipes ranging from an Elvis-inspired banana and peanut butter combination to diet-friendly and vegetable heavy options. The tool can also suggest ingredients that will help boost the amount of calcium, fiber, iron and protein in a particular sandwich.
“Families across the country are busier than ever and as schedules become more demanding, making sure that your family is getting the nutrition it needs can be challenging,” said Stephany Verstraete, Vice President of Marketing for Wonder Bread. “The Sandwich Wonder-izer is a fun and easy-to-use tool that not only builds delicious and nutritious sandwiches, but also provides an excellent opportunity to teach family members of all ages about the importance of getting enough vitamins and minerals in our diets.”
The launch of the Sandwich Wonder-izer follows the brand’s announcement in October that two of Wonder’s most popular breads – Wonder Classic and Wonder Classic Sandwich – now provide the same amount of calcium as eight ounces of milk in two slices and are good sources of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium better.
Wonder has a long history of identifying ways of enhancing nutrition. For example, in the 1940s, Wonder led the way as part of a government sponsored program to enrich bread with vitamins and minerals. Wonder was also one of the first brands to introduce a white bread made with whole grains – Wonder Made With Whole Grain White – a breakthrough product with the taste and texture of white bread that consumers have gravitated to.
