Monthly cheese production numbers for the Dairy State were higher in November compared to a year ago. The USDA reports that Wisconsin’s dairy plants produced 217.8 million pounds of cheese during the month–which was up 4.3 percent from last year, but 2.9 percent less compared to the month earlier.
Nationally, 844 million pounds of cheese was produced–about 1.9 percent more than the same month in 2008, but 2.1 percent below the October 2009 production totals.
Wisconsin’s production of American cheese increased as the state produced 68.4 million pounds, about 2.1 percent more than last year, but 4.2 percent below last month’s production. Cheddar output rose by 2.2 percent compared to 2008 to total 53 million pounds, and was 2.8 percent lower than the month earlier. Italian production was at 102.5 million pounds, up 7.1 percent above last year, but 0.7 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella cheese in Wisconsin totaled 71.1 million pounds–up 7.4 percent from November 2008, and 0.3 percent higher than October 2009.
And Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 24 million pounds, which was 1.8 percent above last year, but 1.2 percent lower than last month.
