Most cheesemakers entering the World Championship Cheese Contest would like to take home the grand prize award, but in this contest the judges are analyzing the overall cheese and also providing important feedback to cheesemakers.
“They’re getting scrutinized for their bitterness, and their acidity, and about 56 different defects,” said John Umhoefer, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association. “So it can be humbling for some, but I think overall a lot of people enter this contest because they want to be criticized with constructive criticism. And they come back and they get a little better and a little better until they win something.”
Again this year, Wisconsin won more awards than any other state or country! Both individual cheesemakers as well as companies swept first, second and third place awards in categories ranging from brick to colby and havarti to gouda.
