MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Cheese Mart announces it has purchased a second distribution center in the Riverwest neighborhood of Milwaukee. The new warehouse center, well-known from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel series about an ATF sting operation in 2012, will be the new central distribution center for Wisconsin Cheese Mart’s catalog and Internet sales.
The Wisconsin Cheese Mart purchased its first warehouse in 2010, a historic former cigar factory built in 1880. It is mere steps from the Wisconsin Cheese Mart store on Milwaukee’s Old World 3rd Street.
“Our Internet sales have far outpaced our capacity to fill orders in our current warehouse,” said Kenneth McNulty, company president. “Although it is nice being close to the store, there is only some much cheese you can stuff into a walk-in cooler.”
The company is also celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Founded in 1938, the Wisconsin Cheese Mart has grown from a small cheese shop into a leader of selling Wisconsin cheese through its catalog, Internet and wholesale operations. As the company continues to grow, there also plans for building a new aging cellar. Construction on the aging cellar will begin in early 2014, with an emphasis on aging small batch, artisanal Wisconsin cheeses.
The Wisconsin Cheese Mart also plans to continue aging its large inventory of super aged cheddar ranging from 13 to 40 years old. Aged Cheddars are set to become available for sale in the coming months.
