US, Mexico Cut Trade Deal On Cheese That Could Put Canada In Conflict With CETA: Experts

A single line about cheese included in a fact sheet released by the U.S. Trade Representative’s office detailing a preliminary agreement between the United States and Mexico on NAFTA, if adopted by Canada, could potentially conflict with this country’s trade deal with Europe.

“In addition, for the first time in a United States trade agreement, Mexico and the United States agreed to not restrict market access in Mexico for U.S. cheeses labeled with certain names,” the USTR’s fact sheet reads.

A list of U.S. cheeses included under the agreement is not provided in the fact sheet.

Such geographical indicators identify where that good is made. They are most commonly linked to regional food items like Tennessee Whiskey, Kentucky Bourbon, Parma Ham, Feta and Asiago.
