WASHINGTON — Members of the U.S. Senate are trying to thwart an effort by the European Union to ban U.S. dairy farmers and producers from using names of European cheeses, like Provolone, Asiago and Mozzarella, in domestic and export markets.
On Tuesday, March 25, more than 50 senators signed a letter urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representatives to fight EU attempts to restrict the use of common cheese names used by the majority of producers across the nation.
The EU's argument is that common cheese names can be displayed appropriately only on products made in areas of Europe where the cheese originated, like feta cheese in Greece, instead being used as a generic label.
