Chiba Prefecture, Japan -Rogue Creamery President and Cheesemaker David Gremmels presented a selection of their handmade cheeses to Ambassador Caroline Kennedy @ FOODEX Japan. FOODEX, the largest food trade show in Asia, was held from March 4 –March 7 @ Makuhari Messe and featured products from over 78 countries. Rogue Creamery led a contingent of Oregon artisan producers presenting in the U.S.A. pavilion in coordination with WUSATA (Western United States Agricultural Trade Association); Theresa Yoshioka, International Trade Manager of ODA, represented the Oregon Department of Agriculture. In addition to Rogue Creamery, beverages from Rogue Ales of Newport, Caldera Brewing of Ashland and HUB (Hopworks Urban Brewery) of Portland were showcased. Products from all 4 Oregon providers are distributed by Phred Kaufman of EZO in Japan.
Ambassador Kennedy enjoyed the pairings of Rogue Creamery cheese with the handcrafted beers from all 3 Oregon breweries. Morimoto Soba Ale Cheddar, Chocolate Stout Cheddar and Hopyard Cheddar were amongst her favorite discoveries @ the trade show. She particularly preferred the combination of Rogue Ales 80th Anniversary brew, an exquisite Imperial Stout, created by Brewmaster John Maier with David Gremmels to honor Rogue Creamery’s 80th Anniversary. Ambassador Kennedy named the booth “The Rogue Gallery”. Chef Brock, Ambassador Kennedy’s Executive Chef, was very complimentary of the cheese and said that it will become a staple for all events at the Ambassador’s residence going forward.
On Monday 3/2, there was a Rogue Creamery cheese reception attended by Gremmels and Caldera Proprietor and Head Brewer, Jim Miller, held @ the residence of David Miller, Minister- Counselor for Agricultural Affairs, USDA in Tokyo. The successful reception, attended by over 20 specialty retailers & buyers , featured 4 Rogue Creamery blues including the classic, Oregon Blue, as well as the 80th Anniversary Ale & Cheddar, the Caldera Mogli Porter and Cheddar, the Caldera Old Growth Imperial Stout and Cheddar & HUB 7 Grain Survival Stout and Cheddar.
