Marie Troy goes to Wegmans to buy her groceries every week. But before she fills her cart, she fills a plate with fresh, hot food and sits down to eat.
The vast prepared foods section at Wegmans, which opened in Northboro in 2011, is a major draw for shoppers; some follow Ms. Troy's routine, others come just to eat and completely ignore the produce or grocery aisles.
Once available only at restaurants, ready-to-eat food like tuna sushi rolls, pepperoni pizza, Cobb salads and chicken wings are now widely available at local supermarkets. Many stores are expanding their prepared food sections, competing head on with restaurants and offering time-pressed shoppers convenient alternatives to cooking from scratch.
