Why is 10 the magic number when critics make their year's-best lists? This year, I decided to stop at six, the half dozen cheeses that made the biggest impression on me. For such a limited collection, I could really skim the cream, so to speak.
Alas, when I settled on six favorites of 2013, I had nine on the list. Memorable cheeses just kept elbowing in.
It was a good year for cheese fans. Bay Area distributors introduced some superb new arrivals from Europe – especially from Switzerland and England – and our domestic cheese makers continued to up their game.
