New York Deli Month Returns In August

Dozens of iconic delicatessens across the country are participating this year in the second annual New York Deli Month, Aug. 1-31, aimed at highlighting the unique culinary heritage of the American delicatessen.

Each deli involved with offer special dishes or menus and a pledge to donate a portion of sales to a charity in that community. Locally, Kenny & Ziggy's New York Delicatessen & Restaurants will participate with three course lunch and dinner for $37 (with 10 percent of each meal sold going to the Holocaust Museum Houston).

It was Kenny & Ziggy's owner, Ziggy Gruber, who founded the event last year in collaboration with Jay Parker, owner of Ben's Best Deli in Rego Park, NY. The first Deli Month came only a year after Gruber was prominently featured in the documentary "Deli Man" chronicling the history of the once-thriving Jewish deli business throughout the country.
