Marin French Cheese's Dark Moon Gains Spotlight

Petaluma, CA – Dark Moon, a Petite ash-rinded, triple-cream brie aged to perfection in pristine Marin County, was a Sofi Award finalist in the New Products category presented by the Specialty Food Association on May 25, 2016, as well as a Gold medal winner at California’s 2016 State Fair Competition on May 11, 2016, at which sister companies Marin French Cheese and Laura Chenel’s earned a total of twenty awards.

With delicate, earthy overtones, Dark Moon derives its name from the elegant layer of vegetable ash that protects the lush, creamy inside. Made with fresh cow’s milk and cream from neighboring Marin County dairies, the new 4-ounce triple-cream wheel is part of the brand’s Petite Brie collection. While historically speaking it is not common to envelop soft-ripened cheeses with ash, Marin French has innovated once again by combining traditional production practices with inventive techniques to create a delectable and visually enticing cheese.

Rounding out the collection of eleven California State Fair awards for Marin French Cheese includes Gold medals for: New Petite Jalapeño, Petite Crème, Petite Truffle, Schloss, Supreme 1.1-pound, and Traditional Brie. Silver awards were attributed to the brand’s Petite Breakfast, Petite Supreme, and the Triple Crème Brie.

On an equally impressive note, sister company Laura Chenel’s attracted the attention of the California judges, garnering nine medals, which included Gold for the Chef’s Chèvre and Original log. Silver award-winning products included the recently launched Cabecou Marinated in Herbs and Spicy Cabecou, as well as the brand’s Honey Log, Goat Brie, and Taupinière.

A bronze medal was awarded to Laura Chenel’s new Pimento & Garlic log, which blends fresh goat cheese with garlic and sun-dried tomatoes, then is coated with red and green pimento peppers making it as attractive as it is tasty. The sweetness of the California sun-dried tomatoes is harmoniously balanced by the subtle spicy and green pepper notes from the pimentos.

“We are over the moon to learn that so many of our cheeses, including Dark Moon, were bestowed a significant number of honors just in the last month,” commented Philippe Chevrollier, General Manager at Marin French Cheese and Laura Chenel’s. “We can’t wait to share our award-winning cheeses with our current customers and new ones alike at the upcoming Fancy Food Show in New York,” Chevrollier exclaimed.

Visit our booths 572 and 576 at the Summer Fancy Food Show from June 26-28, 2016.
