European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker is being hailed as Le Grand Fromage after apparently finding a solution a long-running dispute over a traditional cheese in Cyprus.
The Republic of Cyprus filed last year to the European Commission an application to grant the halloumi/hellim a certificate of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), but the application was disputed by the Turkish Cypriot community.
"I am able, after tough discussions, I have to say, with the two leaders… I am happy to announce we found a common understanding as far as the geographical protection of halloumi-hellim cheese under EU law is concerned,” Juncker said on Thursday.
