Kraft Foods Inc. landed in the company of artisanal cheesemakers when the food conglomerate earned first place for some of its products in a worldwide contest.
The Northfield-based owner of the Cheez Whiz and Velveeta brands won in the mozzarella, fresh mozzarella and spreadable cheese categories of the 2010 World Championship Cheese Contest. Winners in 79 categories were announced Thursday in Madison, Wis.
The World Championship Cheese awards a competition respected among several boutique cheesemongers around Chicago are given every other year. This years contest, hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Assn., drew more than 2,000 entries from 20 counties. More than 30 judges from 12 countries determined the winners.
