Don’t be surprised to find “Made in Iowa” on the packaging of that cheese you just bought. The state is now home to at least 21 cheese producers and the number is only growing.
In fact, Iowa ranks seventh nationwide in cheese production, according to the Iowa State Dairy Association, producing 240 million pounds of cheese in 2010. And if it’s American cheese you want, Iowa ranks sixth.
The state claims 1,403 dairy farms, at least in 2014, and 201 dairy goat farms. A study by Iowa State University in 2012 found that the dairy industry in Iowa produced around 22,000 jobs, and each cow had an economic impact of $23,445.
