How One Alabama Woman Took The Artisan Cheese Business To The Next Level

Tasia Malakasis is hard-wired for business. In her former career as a big-city digital marketing guru, clients included the media giant Gannett. And when the Huntsville native decided to make a radical change by moving back home and buying an artisan cheese company, she expanded Belle Chevre's territory from specialty boutiques to grocery stores, while racking up awards for innovation.

But she also staked her future on fromage because it appealed to her as a nurturer, mother, and cook.

"I can't think of a happier moment for me than when someone buys my cheese—not because I'm making money on it but because they trust me enough to put that on the table for their family," she says. "I tell the ladies at the creamery: 'We're not in the business of making cheese. We're in the business of making people happy.'"
