In recent years, Taster's Choice has rated oven-roasted turkey and honey-flavored ham, with Prairie Organic and Healthy Choice coming out on top, respectively.
This week we're turning back to turkey, spotlighting smoked versions rather than oven-roasted. With so many brands on the shelves, we decided to skip those labeled ultra-thin or shaved, and ended up with 10 samples of smoked turkey.
And it was Hormel ($4.29 for 9 ounces at Safeway) that smoked the competition. This well-known turkey was "pleasantly smoky and salty," with the all-important "turkey flavor evident." "Good texture with some chew." Three tasters would buy and two might.
