RAMSEY, N.J. — Healthy Ones® partnered with Inserra Supermarkets ShopRites to show its support for ongoing diabetes research and prevention. Inserra Supermarkets ShopRites hosted a special presentation at its Ramsey, New Jersey, store where Healthy Ones presented a $5,000 check for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI).
The Diabetes Research Institute’s singular mission is to find a biological cure for diabetes. It has become the world leader in this cause through the support of private funding and philanthropy.
"Diabetes remains an ongoing health issue," said Michael Baughman, Smithfield Foods director of marketing. "Healthy Ones understands the importance of supporting organizations like the Diabetes Research Institute, and we are grateful for partners like Inserra Supermarkets ShopRites who share this philosophy.”
"We appreciate the generosity of Healthy Ones and their commitment to partnering with us to fund diabetes research,” said Lawrence Inserra, Jr., chairman and CEO of Inserra Supermarkets. “Healthy Ones consistently comes forward to raise funds and awareness about diabetes and other chronic illnesses affecting our communities. We appreciate all they have done and look forward to their ongoing support.”
Diabetes is a serious life-altering illness that can strike anyone, from any walk of life. It is estimated that more than 30 million Americans have diabetes, and more than 422 million people are affected worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that by 2030, that number of people living with diabetes will more than double.
“It’s socially conscious companies like Healthy Ones and Inserra Supermarkets ShopRites that are truly making an impact on the world, and we couldn’t be more grateful for this generous donation that will support our cure-focused work,” said Joshua Rednik, president and CEO of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. “With continued support like this, I know the Diabetes Research Institute will be successful in reaching our ultimate goal – finding a cure for diabetes.”
“This donation is so special because Healthy Ones reached out to me to ask how they could help support diabetes research,” said Lindsey Inserra-Hughes, vice president, Inserra Supermarkets. “I am thankful for their support and happy to have a partner like Healthy Ones making a difference in the lives of those living with diabetes.”
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child, Inserra-Hughes is an ardent supporter of diabetes research and serves as the Young Professionals’ Chair of the Northeast Region Board of the DRI Foundation.

About the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation
The mission of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation is to provide the Diabetes Research Institute with the funding necessary to cure diabetes now. The Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine leads the world in cure-focused research. As the largest and most comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, the DRI is aggressively working to develop a biological cure by restoring natural insulin production and normalizing blood sugar levels without imposing other risks. Researchers have already shown that transplanted islet cells allow patients to live without the need for insulin therapy. Some study participants have maintained insulin independence for more than 10 years. The DRI is now building upon these promising outcomes by developing a DRI BioHub, a bioengineered “mini organ” that mimics the native pancreas. While various BioHub platforms are being tested in preclinical and clinical studies, the DRI is also developing strategies to eliminate the need for anti-rejection drugs and reset the immune system to block autoimmunity.
