What is hummus? Chickpeas (garbanzo beans), the sesame seed paste known as tahini, olive oil, garlic, a little lemon juice and, usually, salt.
For the new hummus maker Eat Well Enjoy Life, however, the chickpeas are optional. Think of this as designer hummus where the base legume is switched up frequently in the brand's recipes for its ten hummus flavors. Here, the garbanzo beans might be replaced by soy beans, or yellow lentils, or red lentils, or black beans or white beans.
The company then conjures up toppings and spice blends that seem inspired by world cuisines. In the Wasabi Edamame hummus, the horseradish-based sushi condiment is blended with young soy beans and traditional hummus ingredients. Then it's finished with a ginger and black sesame topping. Sweet & Spicy Black Bean hummus gets some southwestern flair, topped with roasted corn and red pepper. The two Tuscan White Bean flavors are topped with either roasted garlic tapenade or roasted pine nuts and herbs.
