Dallas Fresh Food Association Welcomes Brighter Bights’ Sam Newman

DALLAS  – The Dallas Fresh Food Association (DFFA) is pleased to welcome Brighter Bights Executive Director Sam Newman on November 7 as honored guest speaker at the association’s luncheon. As the DFFA works toward its commitment to community outreach and encouraging consumption of fresh food in local Dallas schools, Newman’s expertise comes at an opportune time for the expanding association.

Since 2012, the Brighter Bights program has provided more than 18 million pounds of fresh produce and educational materials to more than 265,000 students, parents, and teachers in Texas, New York, Florida and Washington D.C. In 2016, the company won the Texas Health Champion Award, and now, Brighter Bites becomes an active part of DFFA’s mission to reach students and their families in Dallas/Fort Worth. Newman’s message will touch on the various opportunities to create a mindset shift and healthy eating habits to hedge against childhood obesity in local schools.

“Three out of ten children in the U.S. are overweight or obese and less than half of children eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily,” said Sam Newman, executive director of Brighter Bights. “I’m hopeful that, with groups like the Dallas Fresh Food Association, we can help combat the lack of understanding and awareness around how food impacts health – especially at the school level where most of these kids spend the vast majority of their time each day.”

The DFFA looks forward to strengthening its sub-committees, charged with going out into the Dallas/Fort Worth community and inspiring careers and consumption of fresh food, through Newman’s guidance.

If you are interested in attending the November 7 luncheon from 11:30am-1pm, or want more information about getting involved with the DFFA, please email dffa.membership@gmail.com. Members are not required to live within or have businesses in Dallas/Fort Worth but are expected to attend the bi-monthly meetings.
