Cheese Pick: Transylvanian Romanian Cave Aged Cheese

Cheese lovers, we have a new one for you.

Our local Aldi is currently stocking an interesting cheese marketed just for Halloween. It's a pale yellow, firm wedge sold under the Aldi Happy Farms brand, made in Transylvania, Romania, and aged in salt caves. The label has a very cute bat and candelabra that makes it appropriate for your Halloween parties, but we were more interested in finding out what the cheese inside was like. How often do you come across a Transylvanian salt cave-aged cheese, after all?

Extensive research and calls to the Aldi headquarters didn't turn up a lot of details on this aged cows' milk cheese, and its origins remain a bit of a mystery. Still, it is tasty and unique enough to be highlighted. At around $8 a pound, it's a good buy too, for a cheese that's quite useful on its own or in cooking.
