Tillamook cheddar is an all-American cheese, nationally appreciated for terrific quality and very affordable.
In his Cheese Primer, cheese guru Steven Jenkins writes that Tillamook is one of the few American cheeses that straddles the line between mass-produced and artisanal — meaning it’s an inexpensive cheese that can be found in many groceries, but is also, as he says, “a cheese that ranks with the finest cheddar made anywhere, one I highly recommend and often enjoy myself.”
I lived on the Oregon coast the summer of 2000 and often would drive past the Tillamook cheese factory in Tillamook County, a gorgeous Pacific Northwest area of rocky coastline and rugged mountains interspersed with valleys full of dairy cattle, so I have a particular affection for the brand.
