THE WAIT IS OVER! We are excited to announce the release of the 2017 Organic Rogue River Blue cheese just in time for the Autumnal Equinox Celebration on 9/22. It is an exceptional year for Rogue River Blue.” The Penicillium roqueforti is creating the luscious and balanced savory, stone-fruit, berry, and nut flavors for which Rogue River Blue is known. The fruit flavors meld together when wrapped with organic Syrah grape leaves that have been soaked in organic pear spirits and aged 9-12 months”, said David Gremmels Cheesemaker /Owner. To add to this remarkable make year, we have used only milk from our own organic dairy during the Rogue River Blue make period. For the 2nd year in a row, the Rogue Creamery team and community have hand – picked Syrah grape leaves at local biodynamic, organic Cowhorn Vineyard. This is the 1st year that our entire release is USDA Certified Organic.
The coming of fall represents a period of slowing down and celebrating the change of seasons with family and friends. For us at Rogue Creamery, it also means the seasonal release of our award winning cheese. Rogue River Blue is produced at the turning of the season, made with late-season milk produced after the Autumnal Equinox. At this time, our cows graze on grasses renewed by cooler temperatures and make milk that is richer and higher in butterfat. It is this special milk, reflective of the unique seasonal influences of the Rogue River Valley, which is the very essence of terroir. Our Rogue River Blue represents the special nature of our region: the soil, the climate and the interaction of herd and pasture. We take great pride in the affinage of organic Rogue River Blue; each 5- lb. wheel is aged from 9 -12 months. It is indeed a time to reflect and honour the earth and our community.
This year the Autumnal Equinox falls on September 22nd at exactly 1:02 pm PDT. On this day and again in the spring the Earth’s axis makes the night time equal to the daytime which means approximately 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. For centuries, cultures worldwide have celebrated this time of year by honouring abundance, balance, conservation and reflection.
For our Autumnal Equinox Celebration, we choose to look towards these virtues to plan our fall party. Certainly, our Rogue River Blue took will take centre stage with late summer and early fall fruits and veggies also playing a starring role.
