Keeping pace with booming microbreweries, wineries, meat producers and farms, Indiana creameries are coming into their own with a roster of award-winning cheese makers that includes Caprini Creamery, Capriole Farms, Fair Oaks Farms, Traders Point Creamery and Jacobs and Brichford Farmstead.
Cheese artisan Fons Smits is proud to be part of that movement. The native Dutchman is opening his own company, Tulip Tree Creamery on the Northwestside, and will have his first cheeses and butter rolling out this spring through farmers markets and wholesale distributors.
Tulip Tree is a diplomatic nod both to his homeland of the Netherlands and Indiana's state tree.
