Krauterschatz is German for “herbal treasure.” This delicious cows’ milk cheese by Austrian cheese company Alma surely fits that bill, packaged with a coating of eight dried, organic “alpine” herbs.
I noticed the cheese at Sam’s and bought a wedge when I saw it was made from raw milk, which is a good sign the cheese will be of great quality. It is. As a matter of fact, it took home the Best of Class award in at the Flavored Semi-Soft Cheese category at the Wisconsin-based World champion cheese contest in 2010, with a score of 99.8.
Alma is located in Vorarlberg, the westernmost state of Austria, abutting Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Vorarlberg is home to the Bregenz Forest (Bregenzerwald), which, according to the Alma website, contains some of he most extensive contiguous high-altitude alpine pastures in Europe.
Dairy cows here are grass fed on pasture in summer, and in winter fed hay from the same grasses.
