In my five years as an outpatient dietitian and 10 as a supermarket dietitian, one thing became quite clear: Many people have a tricky relationship with food labels.
I’ll never forget the first time I was teaching a class about heart health and asked how many people looked at fiber on the label. Almost all hands shot up in the air. Then I asked how many grams of fiber the example label had. Crickets chirped… and it became clear people might need a little more help reading food labels.
After that class, I reframed the question to teach them where to look on the label for fiber and why it was located indented and underneath the carbohydrates. That literally changed the conversation so everyone attending future classes immediately learned where to look without having to admit they didn’t know.
