UTICA, Ohio — Beginning with the first roar of the engines at Summit
Motorsports Park in April, Velvet Ice Cream will rev up its machinery, too,
delivering ice cream by the pound.
Velvet was recently named the official ice cream of Summit Motorsports Park, a
dragstrip in Norwalk, Ohio. Velvet signed a three-year contract to supply Summit
with ice cream beginning with the 2010 season.
Summit Motorsports Park will host nearly 100 races in 2010, beginning with the
Spring Warm-Up on April 17.
Summit Motorsports Park is famous among race fans for selling a pound of ice
cream for $1 at its Wild Bill’s Ice Cream Saloon.
“Race fans are known to be very loyal to supporters of their sport, so this
gives us a terrific opportunity to introduce them to the Velvet brand,” said
Luconda Dager, president of Velvet Ice Cream. “Summit Motorsports Park is a
first-class operation and we’re thrilled to have our ice cream sold in their
facility.”
Sean Cassidy, director of food services for Summit Motorsports Park, said the
parks offers guests up to 10 different flavors of ice cream. There are times
during the summer when the line for the pound of ice cream snakes through the
park for several hundred feet. The ice cream is sold in three-gallon tubs, which
weight about 15 pounds each.
“It’s extremely popular with our fans and it’s not unusual to go through as many
as 6,000 pounds of ice cream in a day during our NHRA event,” Cassidy said.
“Last year, we sold 33,000 pounds of ice cream – about 16.5 tons. We’re excited
to be working with Velvet Ice Cream. Like Summit Motorsports Park, which is run
by the Bader family, Velvet is a family owned and operated business. We think
the Baders and the Dagers will work well together.”
Headquartered at Ye Olde’ Mill in Utica, Ohio, Velvet Ice Cream has been a
family owned and operated business for nearly 100 years. Founded in 1914, Velvet
has been run by four generations of the Dager family. Each year, Velvet produces
more than five million gallons of ice cream, which can be found in freezer cases
throughout the Midwest. The historic Ye Olde’ Mill, which houses the company
headquarters, an ice cream museum and restaurant, attracts more than 150,000
visitors a year.
