South Mountain Creamery, one of two dairies that began home delivery of milk and other products in Hampton Roads last year, has stopped service in the region.
The Maryland milk processor and dairy producer, was unable to build enough local business to sustain operations, said J.R. Byrd, the creamery's general manager. Among its 230 to 250 regular customers who ordered week-to-week, only 20 to 30 had signed up in the past year.
"We just could not get it to grow," he said.
The creamery spent "thousands and thousands" advertising its service, including about $12,000 in radio promotions in its last month, Byrd said. "Nothing worked."
