There are lots of reasons a customer will purchase one food item instead of another when grocery shopping: taste, health, culture, religion and more. Consumers face tens of thousands of products in the typical grocery store, so, standing out in the sea of choices can be a challenge. Want to grab their attention? Meet their needs and help solve one of their problems, and chances are, they’ll notice you.
Instead of listing attributes for your product, provide context from the perspective of someone on how your product can be used. By considering three simple factors that many people face, chances are more likely that you can beat the odds and make it to checkout because you are helping solve a problem for your customer.
- Culinary skills If someone doesn’t know how to prepare what you sell or make, it can become a missed opportunity. One of the great things about dairy (milk, cheese, and yogurt) is it’s ready to use “as-is.” So highlight this and show them how to use the item with other foods. For example, if your product is cheese and it goes well with a certain fruit, offer that pairing tip along with a “how to” for the fruit. Help them be successful in their kitchen by offering tips and tricks relevant to both your product and complementary items.
