J.S. West & Cos. has launched a new brand of eggs laid in hen cages designed to meet space standards approved by state voters.
They're called Emma's Comfort Coop eggs and they're available at O'Brien's Markets and about half of Save Mart's stores.
The Modesto-based company was California's first to start converting cages under Proposition 2, which passed in 2008 and will take effect in 2015.
The measure requires enough space for hens to stand up, turn around and flap their wings freely. The sponsors and the egg industry disagree over just how many square inches that should be.
