Mauna Kea Moo is moving ahead with its $3 million plans for a dairy and cheesery on the Big Island after the Hawaii Board of Natural Resources recently agreed to lease 1,395 acres of state land in Hamakua to the owner and operator.
The 35-year lease of former sugar cane land has an annual rent of $20,500 for the first 10 years, the state said.
The lease ends a five-year process for Kees Kea, a Big Island resident whose family has been in the dairy business for three generations, told PBN that the dairy would house up to 200 cows.
