In Three Years, Ice Cream A Boon To Kleinpeter Farms Dairy

There are still a few Louisiana food products Jeff Kleinpeter has yet to figure out how to work into his ice cream.

“We haven’t figured out how to make a great-tasting ice cream using Tabasco,” Kleinpeter said one recent morning from his office at the Kleinpeter Farms Dairy on Airline Highway. He is president of the nearly 100-year-old family-owned dairy.

In 2008 he helped expand the iconic Baton Rouge dairy business into the ice cream market with the idea of incorporating Louisiana food products, like Aunt Sally’s pralines, Community Coffee, Bergeron pecans and Louisiana-made honey, into ice cream flavors.

In three years, Kleinpeter ice cream has grown to 26 flavors, each one including at least one Louisiana food product. The ice cream can be found in practically every local grocery store, such as Albertson’s, Winn-Dixie, Calandro’s Market, Matherne’s Supermarket, Walmart and Whole Foods Market.
