IDDBA's What's In Store 2015: Dairy Trends Forecast

Madison, WI – “Protein” is the new buzzword among today’s consumers, and retailers can capitalize on this trend by marketing their dairy departments as wellness destinations where shoppers can find natural foods, clean ingredient lists, and, of course, products rich in protein. This food industry trend and dozens more within the dairy, deli, cheese, and bakery sectors are highlighted in What’s in Store 2015, the 29th edition of the annual resource publication of the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association™ (IDDBA).

Among the highlights of the Dairy chapter:

  • Dairy is one of the most frequented perishable departments in the store. Consumers average 35 trips to the department per year.
  • Dairy represents the second largest category for private label products.
  • Protein is the buzzword in dairy products, as 71% of consumers report that they are seeking dairy products for their protein plus needs.
  • Growth projections are strong for the spoonable yogurt category. Expected growth is over 20% through 2018 to $63 billion in sales globally.
  • Dairy products align with many consumer macro trends—from indulgent options, to healthy on-the-go snacks, to global ethnic flavors.

Dairy departments are also highly associated with healthy eating occasions, including breakfast and healthy snacks, as revealed in IDDBA’s original research, Engaging the Evolving Shopper: Serving The New American Appetite. Stores can leverage their health halo by marketing solutions to shoppers around breakfast and healthy snacking occasions.

Engaging the Evolving Shopper: Serving the New American Appetite is IDDBA's latest original research that explores the evolving U.S. shopper of fresh perimeter categories – dairy, deli, bakery, prepared foods, specialty cheese and specialty meats – through the lens of Millennials, modern eating, health and wellness, and digital engagement. This study provides insights and implications around: how Millennials are shaping food trends, particularly in fresh perimeter categories; how new demands of modern life are changing eating culture, enabling meals and snacks to happen anytime and anywhere, shaping how shoppers think about the fresh perimeter; how health and wellness trends have redefined how shoppers see the role of food in their lives; and how technology has become integrated in shoppers' lives as they seek information and inspiration both in-store and digitally for deeper engagement with their foods. The research is free to members and $795 for nonmembers. For more information and to order, visit iddba.org/engagingevolvingshopper.
