Hilmar Cheese, which employs more than 430 workers at its plant in Dalhart, recently informed producers they would need to end safe but genetically engineered growth hormone rBST use by June 2018.
Company director of education and public relations Denise Skidmore wrote in a media release that while Hilmar believes rBST is safe for human consumption, consumer confusion over the genetically engineered growth hormone has prompted the company to remove it from future plans.
Hilmar encouraged other milk and cheese production companies to follow suit so that the industry may be united.
