For the third consecutive year, Hiland Dairy coordinates the delivery of thousands of containers of Omaha Public School's unused milk to the Open Door Mission (ODM). The non-profit serves more than 2,000 hot nutritious meals to the hungry and homeless, daily.
Twice annually, Hiland Dairy coordinates a pick-up of the school milk for delivery to the ODM. During the summer months, ODM's Kids to Kamp program will provide a safe and structured environment for homeless children including three meals and two snacks per day.
This is a vital program considering more than 22 million children nationally may miss out on milk's nutrition in the summer months when schools are closed and they lose access to free or reduced-price milk programs. Milk that is not able to be distributed before the "best by" date will be frozen for later use in meal preparation.
