Milk is one of the items most requested, yet unavailable, at food banks for the hungry. Ninety-five percent of food banks don't receive enough milk to meet clients' needs, according to the Milk Processor Education Program.
St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance gives one gallon of milk a year to most of its families, according to spokesman Jerry Brown.
"It's a hard item to donate, and we just don't get enough," he said.
That's expected to change with the recent launch of the Great American Milk Drive, the first national program to help deliver milk to families in need.
