The owners of Clinton Township cheese manufacturer S. Serra Cheese Co. must hire an independent laboratory to conduct ongoing tests for bacteria and take action to correct insanitary conditions, a federal judge ordered.
U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn issued an injunction in a 2014 U.S. Department of Justice civil action against the company and its co-owners, Stefano and Fina Serra. Cohn had found in October that the company had violated the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by distributing adulterated, ready-to-eat cheese after testing by the Food and Drug Administration found non-illness causing strains of listeria bacteria at Serra's production center, and non-pathogenic e coli bacteria in cheese.
"The Department of Justice is committed to preventing the unlawful distribution of adulterated food and enforcing laws designed to protect consumer health and safety," Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer, head of the Justice Department's civil division, said in a statement.
