Albany – Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urging that his nation refrain from adopting dairy policies that stymie New York milk exports.
The letter comes as Canada has considered implementing a national ingredient strategy that would favor the use of Canadian milk suppliers over using, say, imports from New York producers. Ontario already has implemented a new pricing policy said to discourage imports of ultra-filtered milk from the United States. The federal government is considering a similar national policy
The idea has drawn the ire of New York dairy farmers and the lawmakers who represent them.
