Albert Straus, a pioneer in the organic dairy industry and an innovator in sustainable farming, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his family creamery in West Marin this month.
Straus, who operates an organic dairy farm on the same West Marin ranch where he grew up, has carried on a family tradition. His father, Bill Straus, opened a dairy farm with 23 cows on the property in 1941. Straus started his own business in 1994 and now has 280 cows, which produce about 10 percent of the milk for his creamery in Marshall.
“We opened up in February 1994 as the first certified organic dairy and creamery west of the Mississippi River and the first 100 percent certified organic creamery in the U.S.,” he said.
