It has been brought to the attention of the CNLA that occasionally trucks loaded with nursery stock and destined for the US are being unloaded for additional inspections. These additional inspections, which are ordered by the US Customs and Border Protection appear to be random in nature and nursery stock or floriculture product is not being specifically targeted.

Cut flower longevity is often reduced by an accumulation of bacteria in floral solutions and flower stems. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2), a broad spectrum bactericide commercially used for sanitizing fruit and vegetable surfaces, was tested to determine its potential use as an antimicrobial agent for fresh cut flower stems and solutions.

The Loblaws grocery company has come up with an innovative way to handle some of the garbage that comes from their seasonal home and garden centres. They’ve just wrapped up the third year of a national plastic pot and tray recycling program, where people can bring their empty plastic garden pots and trays back to the company’s garden centres and they will be recycled.
