Planning a wedding? Put aside money for dessert. At $6 to $10 a serving, a wedding cake can take a big bite out of your budget.
According to The Wedding Report, a research company tracking wedding spending and trends, the average price of a bakery wedding cake serving 100 guests runs about $600. Add specialty decorations and/or fillings and that cost increases to $800. Choose an upscale, trendy baker and the bottom line can go even higher — as much as $1,000 or more.
Couples looking to slice costs have another option. Order your cake at a supermarket and get bargain-priced tiers of joy.
In the past, grocery offerings were limited to birthday cakes with pink or blue roses and SpongeBob sheet cakes. These days, in-store bakeries are vying with specialty pastry shops for wedding business by offering customized, multilayered creations starting at just $1.25 a serving.
