Bread Furst is expanding its floury reach in the District. Beginning Thursday, loaves from Mark Furstenberg's Van Ness bakery will be available at the Whole Foods Market on P Street NW.
Furstenberg said the partnership came about after a "delegation" from Whole Foods came and ate anonymously at the bakery. The company then approached him about getting his artisan loaves on their shelves.
"I thought, 'What an incredible development,'" Furstenberg said. "For 25 years I've been trying to get good breads into mainstream supermarkets, always failing to do so." He attributed that largely to stores' fear of competition for their own bread.
