Specialty Bakers Devastated By March 13 Fire Lays Off 102 Workers

A Lititz bakery that sustained an estimated $8 million in damage in a devastating March 13 fire has laid off 102 employees, according to a filing with the state Department of Labor & Industry.

Specialty Bakers, a Marysville-based company that makes desserts sold in grocery stores, employed 140 workers at the 560 Furnace Hills Pike plant before the fire, according to its website.

The company on Friday referred questions to Jill Helsel Gingrich of La Torre Communications, who said in an email that Specialty Bakers "suffered a catastrophic loss and legally had to notify their employees of an indefinite layoff."
