Schnucks Des Peres To Sponsor Gluten-Free Sample Fest

DES PERES, Mo. – Living a gluten-free lifestyle is a medical necessity for the three million adults and children in the U.S. with celiac disease, but thanks to some of the newest products on the market, gluten free doesn’t have to mean taste free!  On Sept. 13, 4 – 7 p.m., the health team at Schnucks Des Peres (12332 Manchester Road) is inviting families to learn more at their “Gluten-Free Sample Fest.”

Celiac disease is a digestive disorder in which the protein found in wheat, rye and barley triggers an autoimmune response.  This causes damage to the small intestine and can inhibit the absorption of nutrients from foods.  Schnucks Registered Dietitian Kara Behlke explains, “A growing number of our customers are being diagnosed with celiac disease and others are curious to learn more about gluten-free products.  I will be on hand throughout the event to talk about the disease, discuss special nutrition considerations as well as give product recommendations as we explore our store’s newly expanded gluten-free section.  The new area includes more than 900 products in addition to thousands more throughout the aisles.”

“During our event, customers will have an opportunity to try many of these products before they buy them.  We will sample more than 50 gluten-free foods including breads and crackers, baked goods and even beer (must be 21),” said Behlke. “The Schnucks Cooks kiosk will demonstrate new recipes, and our chefs will conduct live demonstrations to help you learn to prepare wholesome gluten-free foods.”

Behlke added, “We are transforming our mezzanine into a Gluten-Free Kids Zone, complete with food stations that include ‘Build Your Own Parfait,’ ‘Create the Perfect Smoothie,’ ‘Kid-Friendly Sushi Rolling’ and ‘Kaleidoscope Banana Popsicles.’  We are particularly excited to have our gluten free partner Andrea’s coming in to offer a ‘Build-Your-Own-Mini Pancake Bar.’”

Behlke says the first 100 attendees will receive a free reusable shopping bag while all in attendance will receive coupons for future gluten-free purchases.  “Although it’s gotten a lot of press recently from celebrities who are trying the diet, gluten-free living is not a fad or trend; for some it’s a way of life.  We hope our expanded product line and special in-store education events will help raise awareness of the disease and make life just a bit easier for those who are living gluten-free lifestyles,” Behlke said.
