Sara Lee Corp. said Friday it plans to close its massive Greenville County
bread-making factory at 1916 Piedmont Highway by early next year in response to
the loss of one of its major customers, putting about 200 people out of work.
Mike Cummins, director of corporate communications for Downers Grove, Ill.-based
Sara Lee, said the company on Thursday gave employees at the plant their Worker
Adjustment and Retraining Act notices, a 60-day notification enforced by the
U.S. Department of Labor.
Cummins said some of the affected employees will be offered jobs at other
company facilities, but most will be laid off. Those employees are being offered
severance packages and transitional services.
