Rising flour prices press Chuck Colarusso to consider extreme measures.
"Our bread prices have gone up tremendously," said Mr. Colarusso, owner of Colarusso's Cafe in Jessup and Colarusso's Coal Fired Pizza in Dickson City. "We're at the point where we are going to start to bake our own bread."
Flour prices have escalated drastically since mid-March, as wheat futures have advanced almost 20 percent because of flooding in the upper Plains states.
"In the last 30 days, we have seen some big-time increases," said Lonnie Gagliardi, co-owner of Orlando Foods Inc., a wholesaler that distributes flour to restaurants and pizzerias throughout the region. "It's a day-by-day game. It's too volatile to make any long-term plans."
