WINNIPEG, MANITOBA – Richardson Oilseed Limited has developed two new margarine products using canola oil, which has the lowest saturated fat of all major vegetable oils. Bake-It Sweet and Roll-it are significantly lower in saturated fat compared to high palm content alternatives. Both products are being launched at IFT, the world's largest food ingredients show, June 11 to 14 in New Orleans.
Targeted at the baking industry, Bake-It Sweet is a non-hydrogenated, all-purpose baking margarine made with canola oil. Gluten-free, it is ideal for cookies, cakes, icing, crumble-style pie shells and toppings and formulated for easy mixing. Roll-It is a non-hydrogenated, premium, roll-in margarine ideal for croissants and Danish pastries. Richardson's product development team worked closely with customers to develop products that are healthier alternatives and functional in their applications.
"These new margarines meet trans fat regulations and offer commercial bakers a healthier ingredient," says John Haen, Vice-President, Nutrition. "Our goal is to help food processors develop healthier products using canola oil to lower the saturated fat content, while preserving the good taste and functionality of their food products."
Bake-It Sweet and Roll-It are the latest products from Richardson Oilseed. The company recently launched Pop-It and Top-It, a healthier canola-based popcorn popping oil and topping, Bake-It Freedom, a non-hydrogenated margarine with no artificial preservatives or flavours, and Ice-It, a non-hydrogenated, icing shortening. Richardson Oilseed's Research and Development Manager Gary Knox recently received the Canadian Institute of Food Science & Technology's 2010 Food Development Award for developing innovative, canola-based food products.
"At Richardson, we have a strong commitment to research and development," says Haen, noting that the company recently invested $16.5 million to expand its canola oil processing plant and research and development laboratory in Lethbridge. "With our team of experts, pilot plant, laboratories and test bakeries, we work closely with our customers to develop innovative solutions to meet their specific needs."
