Reps. Davis & Pitts Introduce Legislation To Eliminate Harmful Sugar Program

Washington, DC – Rep. Danny k. Davis (D-IL) issued the following statement on the need to end sugar subsidies and wind down excessive quota and price supports:

The 7th Congressional District of Illinois is a prime example of the cost to our economy of the current sugar program.

Once the confectionary capitol of the nation with some of the most productive food industry workers in the world producing some of the best known names in candy in the world, the 7th District is now home to a shattered industry devastated by sugar prices kept artificially high in the interests of a few huge sugar plantations in southern Florida and, more recently, a small number of beet growers in the upper Midwest.

Who are the losers?

The losers are thousands of hard-working confectionary worker families, and millions of American consumers paying artificially inflated prices for products containing sugar.

This is still another example of narrow special interests misusing U.S. farm policy, leaving the rest of the nation to pick up the costs.

It's wrong, it's counter-productive, it's wasteful, and its got to stop.

That's why we, Democrats and Republicans have come together to create bi-partisan legislation that will eliminate sugar subsidies and wind down excessive quotas and price supports.
