PLYMOUTH – Grampa Stroehmann is moving.
Bimbo Bakeries USA, which has owned the Stroehmann Bread Co. for six years, announced this week that it will end production at its West Ridge Pike bakery in Plymouth, which has turned out the iconic sliced bread and buns popularized for decades by the white-mustachioed, Pennsylvania Dutch mascot Grampa Stroehmann.
The facility employs 266 people, with 124 to be affected by the shutdown when the company shifts production to other Bimbo bakeries, including one in Macungie Township, Lehigh Valley.
In a press release, Lou Minella, a spokesman for Bimbo (pronounced “Beembo”) said that “this was a difficult decision because of the dedicated team of associates at this bakery.”
