BOSTON — The city of Lawrence, with an unemployment rate of 17.5, will soon get aid from an unlikely source — baked goods.
The food manufacturer Muffin Town is expected to immediately create 60 jobs for the town after MassDevelopment, the commonwealth’s finance and development authority, granted the company a $6.5 million bond to buy and renovate an old building for a new plant, MassDevelopment said.
This plant will eventually bring upwards of 300 jobs to Lawrence in the future, the company said. Renovations are expected to be complete by the end of 2010.
"Lawrence has a long history of manufacturing from paper to textiles, and Muffin Town's homemade baked goods represent the latest chapter," said Robert L. Culver, the MassDevelopment president and CEO.
