Move To Unionize Bakery Delivery Routes Gives Rise To Lawsuit

Bimbo Bakeries USA Inc. faces a lawsuit accusing it of giving bakery delivery routes to members of Teamsters Local 955 without compensating the independent owner-operator who owns the delivery rights.

According to a suit filed Wednesday in federal court in Kansas City, Brandon Feagles, owner of Brandon's Bread LLC, bought an exclusive lifetime right from Bimbo to distribute all products manufactured or distributed within an area of the Kansas City metro. However, the Raymore man argues that the Pennsylvania-based company entered into negotiations with the union to take over his route once the company acquired the rights. The lawsuit says the company never acquired the rights and yet it allowed the Teamsters to start delivery anyway.

Feagles said he had no intention to sell the route and that Bimbo's offer to pay $11,345 for the route was far below the price he paid to acquire the route. In fact, the lawsuit said the offer would have been rejected on principle alone.
